Dr. Scott Kline
Scott Kline is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at St. Jerome’s University in the University of Waterloo. He is a former interim president and vice chancellor as well as a vice president academic and dean at St. Jerome’s University. During the 2021-2022 academic year, he is the inaugural Visiting Scholar in Ethics at St. Mark’s College at the University of British Columbia and at Providence Health Care in Vancouver.
He is a member of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA), the Society of Christian Ethics (SCE), and the American Academy of Religion (AAR), where he was a former member of the AAR’s Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Resuscitation Advisory Committee with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Professor Kline is the author of The Ethical Being: A Catholic Guide to Contemporary Issues (2013). He has authored or co-authored book chapters on a variety of topics including religion and secularism, Catholic peace movements, the academic study of religion, and the role of faith-based organizations in systems-level approaches to homelessness. He has published in the following academic journals: International Relations, The Toronto Journal of Theology, International Journal of Public Theology, The Journal of Religion and Popular Culture, and Peace and Change: A Journal of Peace Research. He is a contributing editor with Critical Theology: A Journal of Theology, Culture, and Society.
A member of the CanSAVE research cluster at UBC and St. Paul’s Hospital, his current research focuses on increasing survival rates for people who suffer out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest with the assistance of bystander intervention and programs such as “neighbor saving neighbor.”
He teaches courses in theological ethics, religion and politics, and religion and social change. During his time at St. Mark’s College, he will offer courses on leadership ethics and Catholic ethics. He is currently writing a book entitled The Good Samaritan and Healthcare Justice.
